We talk about the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR Coupe, nicknamed the Uhlenhaut Coupe, which was essentially a race car for the streets. It had a screaming straight-eight engine and could hit 180 miles per hour, making it the world's fastest road car at the time. However, after a horrific Le Mans disaster where a similar Mercedes killed over 80 spectators, the company withdrew from racing and scrapped production plans. Only two prototypes were ever built, and one just sold for a mind-blowing $142 million
